Inboard dog training—also known as “board and train”—is a widely misunderstood service in South Africa, despite being a proven and respected method internationally. At Pawsitive Dog Training College, we believe it’s time to clear the air and highlight the facts, benefits, and crucial differences between inboard training, behavioural rehabilitation, and protection work.

What Is Inboard Dog Training?

Inboard training involves a dog staying at a professional training facility for a set period—typically 1 to 3 weeks—where a qualified trainer works with the dog daily to install foundational obedience, address problem behaviours, or provide behavioural therapy. It's ideal for families who:

• • Have limited time for consistent dog training
• • Are overwhelmed by dog behavioural challenges
• • Are inexperienced with structured dog training methods

This type of immersion allows the trainer to implement, reinforce, and generalize obedience commands across a variety of environments and handlers—something that can take months to achieve in a home setting with sporadic lessons.

Research Insight: A 2018 study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science found that dogs trained using consistent reinforcement in a controlled environment learned obedience commands faster and with fewer stress indicators than those trained inconsistently at home.

Why Inboard Training Works

• • Daily structure and consistency – a key element in learning and behaviour change
• • Multiple handlers – dogs generalize commands beyond one person
• • Controlled exposure – helps build emotional resilience
• • Faster results – typically 10–14 days for foundational obedience

Dogs that are fearful, reactive, or anxious benefit greatly from this structured environment. Many issues like separation anxiety, barking, and reactivity are rooted in insecurity. Inboard training builds confidence, and when confidence grows—behaviour improves.

Example: A reactive dog that constantly barks or lunges may be operating from insecurity. Inboard training removes reactive triggers, allowing counterconditioning and behavioural recovery in a safe, managed space.

The Pawsitive Difference: Not All Training Is Equal

There are three major types of dog training, and it’s critical not to confuse them:

1. Obedience & Manners Training
   Goal: Sit, stay, recall, leash walking, etc.
   Focus: Communication, boundaries, daily structure.
   Safe for: All family dogs.


2. Behavioural Modification
   Goal: Treat fear, anxiety, aggression,seperation anxiety etc.
   Focus: Science-based desensitization and behaviour change.
   Requires: Qualified canine behaviourist with academic credentials.
   Safe for: Complex K9 behavioural issues.


3. Protection / Security Training
   Goal: Train dogs to bite on command or defend.
   Focus: Drive-building and aggression reinforcement.
   Regulated by: PSIRA.
   ⚠️ Not suitable for family homes.

⚠️ Warning: Protection training is not behaviour modification. It often uses intimidation to encourage biting. Once a dog is trained to bite, you cannot control the target.
