Dogs and Puppies learn fastest with consistent routines, controlled environments, and high-frequency short sessions. Inboard training removes common home interruptions, allowing your dog to practise calm, obedience, and impulse control many times per day with professional guidance. We then transfer these skills to you during handover and follow-ups so they “stick” at home.
We’re not only K9 trainers — we’re canine behaviourists, educators, and your dog’s biggest advocates. People choose us because we offer real transformation, not quick fixes.

Inboard dog training—also known as “board and train”—is a widely misunderstood service in South Africa, despite being a proven and respected method internationally. At Pawsitive Dog Training College, we believe it’s time to clear the air and highlight the facts, benefits, and crucial differences between inboard training, behavioural rehabilitation, and protection work.
Inboard training involves a dog staying at a professional training facility for a set period—typically 1 to 3 weeks—where a qualified trainer works with the dog daily to install foundational obedience, address problem behaviours, or provide behavioural therapy. It's ideal for families who:
This type of immersion allows the trainer to implement, reinforce, and generalize obedience commands across a variety of environments and handlers—something that can take months to achieve in a home setting with sporadic lessons.
Research Insight: A 2018 study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science found that dogs trained using consistent reinforcement in a controlled environment learned obedience commands faster and with fewer stress indicators than those trained inconsistently at home.
Dogs that are fearful, reactive, or anxious benefit greatly from this structured environment. Many issues like separation anxiety, barking, and reactivity are rooted in insecurity. Inboard training builds confidence, and when confidence grows—behaviour improves.
Example: A reactive dog that constantly barks or lunges may be operating from insecurity. Inboard training removes reactive triggers, allowing counterconditioning and behavioural recovery in a safe, managed space.
There are three major types of dog training, and it’s critical not to confuse them:
⚠️ Warning: Protection training is not behaviour modification. It often uses intimidation to encourage biting. Once a dog is trained to bite, you cannot control the target. We regularly rehabilitate dogs that were trained for security work and later bit their owners or children. Why protection training is not for family dogs →
At Pawsitive Dog Training College, we do the dog training ourselves. We are animal behaviourists with academic training in the brain and psychology of dogs. No unqualified staff are allowed to train dogs here—especially those undergoing behavioural rehabilitation.
Before any dog goes home, we provide:
Because owner education is just as vital as the training itself.
Inboard training is not a shortcut—it’s a structured foundation. It works fast because the training is done daily, but it still requires your involvement afterward. If you have a dog with reactivity, fear, aggression, or simply no obedience yet—this may be the smartest place to begin.
